Riverdale producer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has claimed one of the core characters will suffer a ‘tragic fate’ at some point in the ongoing fifth season.

The fifth season of Riverdale has finally thrown Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and his friends seven years into the future. Now the CW and Netflix series has fully left its high school era behind, the gang could face their deadliest threat yet after reuniting last week.

Robert Aguirre-Sacasa has teased a major death to come in the ongoing fifth season of Riverdale.

The series finally made its comeback earlier this year after season four was cut short by the sudden outbreak of coronavirus.

Now Archie and the gang have wrapped up their last year in Riverdale High, the series took an unprecedented leap forward by seven years into the group of friends’ mid-20s.

In last week’s episode, Purgatorium, fans saw Archie reunite with Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) as a new mystery grips their small town.

The showrunner teased the new killer will claim another victim in the coming episodes, and it could be someone we’ve known since the start of the series.

Whether it will be one of the core four is still unknown, though there is still the chance that regular favourites such as Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) or Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) could be taken out.

Moreover, Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) may have made herself more vulnerable than ever by secluding herself away from the rest of the town as she laments the Blossom family curse.

Even without the threat of yet another dark stalker terrorising the streets of Riverdale, this season is set to be the darkest chapter of the show yet.

Archie and Veronica and Betty and Jughead’s relationships were all torn apart when we last saw them, and it’s uncertain if they’ll be able to remain friends after the drama of their senior year.

Though they promised to stay in touch before Archie’s departure to join the army after graduation, this season will also explain why they haven’t reconnected up to this point.

The showrunner explained: “One of the fun things about the time jump is that we see the kids have kind of gone their separate ways.

“A more human mystery is: Why didn’t they stay in touch? How did they drift apart?”

Fans were perhaps most distraught by Betty and Jughead’s bittersweet departure, as they both admitted they still loved each other before Betty departed to Yale.

Aguirre-Sacasa promised viewers will finally get closure for ‘Bughead’, but could their story conclude with one of their deaths at the hands of Riverdale’s newest killer?

He teased: “Probably the biggest mystery is what transpired between Betty and Jughead, that they so completely are out of each other’s lives.”

After almost a year’s delay, Riverdale is finally here to stay, but season five looks like it could bring at least one character’s story to a brutal conclusion.
